new documentary on lawyers

Worth a look, but repeats (in one of the four trailers) the usual poster children for ridiculous lawsuits, even the McDonald's coffee suit. Link

For more (better) information on the McDonald's suit: Link

Today was my last day working in Oak Ridge. It was a great place for me, but it is time for me to hang my hat in another place, namely: Knoxville. I'm on my own, now. (Not completely on my own though, as I have some good support.)

Noncitizens and illegal immigrants will be denied

The President used to (occasionally) speak Spanish. He doesn't do that anymore.

I'll be sworn in

on Friday. I will then be licensed to practice law in Tennessee.

Tennessee's next execution

was set for Wednesday, September 26, 2007.

Last week, U.S. District Court Judge Aleta Trauger barred the state from executing inmates under the state’s four-month-old lethal injection procedure. Link

Tennessee just asked the State Supreme Court to postpone the execution. The Court granted that request. Link

Update: the execution has been reset for January 8, 2007.

We don't kill people

Boyd's death sentence was upheld by the Tennessee Supreme Court in January 1998 when the justices dismissed his claim that prosecutors improperly cited the murder itself as an aggravating factor to support their call for the death penalty. Link

"I've always taken the position that I'm not trying to be the 13th juror; I'm trying to be a backstop," Bredesen told The Associated Press on Friday. "The judicial system just kind of broke down." Link

Gov. Bredesen just commuted a death sentence to life in prison without parole. The crime was committed in Memphis at the Lorraine Motel in 1986.

We kill people.

At 1:15 a.m. [this morning] a cable was screwed into the base of the electric chair. Link

Update:
"Everybody left in the execution room at this point. Everything was still. Nobody said a word. Then we heard the whir of the exhaust fan in the death chamber. Five seconds later: BANG! A loud electrical noise." Link

Article in Knoxville Voice:

"Stephen Martin moved to Knoxville in 2004 to attend law school and says it took him awhile to feel at home in his new city — until he started riding his bike to school from his home in the Fort." ...

Praxis at Shawn Adams

I played with team "Praxis" on Saturday and Sunday. We were in Chattanooga for the 14th Annual Shawn Adams Memorial Spirit of the Game Ultimate Tournament. Meredith took this picture, and I think it's great. There are many more good pictures in her portfolio, linked above via the title of this post ( the title is immediately above the group picture.)

Below are the two pictures I like of the few I took.
