My new website

stephentrmartin.com - Knoxville Bankruptcy

It's very basic, now, and still needs editing. It's a baby.

Girls in their Summer Clothes

While cleaning out my email inbox, I finally listened to a song I'd been sent. Link. In this message there were also a dozen or so comments.

So I finally downloaded the song and listened to it and deleted it. Then I read some of the comments, thought: "that can't be right, that was Bruce Springsteen?" So then I went and found the original post so I could verify. True! Good to know! So, I have undeleted the song. Interesting song. I like them both so much. I'd even like to hear Mr. Merritt return the favor, now.

The current campaign for Presidency

"this is the first election since 1928 in which neither the sitting president nor the sitting vice president has sought their party's nomination." Link

It will be Giuliani versus Clinton. Clinton will beat him. Democrats are excited to vote, and don't have huge problems with Clinton. Republicans are not excited to vote, and have major problems with Giuliani.

On Persuasion

"I think the object of the game is to get out of the mindset of "getting people to do something" and instead just create a really nice, really open invitation." Link

new documentary on lawyers

Worth a look, but repeats (in one of the four trailers) the usual poster children for ridiculous lawsuits, even the McDonald's coffee suit. Link

For more (better) information on the McDonald's suit: Link

Today was my last day working in Oak Ridge. It was a great place for me, but it is time for me to hang my hat in another place, namely: Knoxville. I'm on my own, now. (Not completely on my own though, as I have some good support.)

Noncitizens and illegal immigrants will be denied

emergency Medicaid coverage for chemotherapy. Link

The President used to (occasionally) speak Spanish. He doesn't do that anymore.

I'll be sworn in

on Friday. I will then be licensed to practice law in Tennessee.

Tennessee's next execution

was set for Wednesday, September 26, 2007.

Last week, U.S. District Court Judge Aleta Trauger barred the state from executing inmates under the state’s four-month-old lethal injection procedure. Link

Tennessee just asked the State Supreme Court to postpone the execution. The Court granted that request. Link

Update: the execution has been reset for January 8, 2007.

We don't kill people

Boyd's death sentence was upheld by the Tennessee Supreme Court in January 1998 when the justices dismissed his claim that prosecutors improperly cited the murder itself as an aggravating factor to support their call for the death penalty. Link

"I've always taken the position that I'm not trying to be the 13th juror; I'm trying to be a backstop," Bredesen told The Associated Press on Friday. "The judicial system just kind of broke down." Link

Gov. Bredesen just commuted a death sentence to life in prison without parole. The crime was committed in Memphis at the Lorraine Motel in 1986.

We kill people.

At 1:15 a.m. [this morning] a cable was screwed into the base of the electric chair. Link

Update:
"Everybody left in the execution room at this point. Everything was still. Nobody said a word. Then we heard the whir of the exhaust fan in the death chamber. Five seconds later: BANG! A loud electrical noise." Link

Knoxville bikes

Article in Knoxville Voice:

"Stephen Martin moved to Knoxville in 2004 to attend law school and says it took him awhile to feel at home in his new city — until he started riding his bike to school from his home in the Fort." ...

Praxis at Shawn Adams

I played with team "Praxis" on Saturday and Sunday. We were in Chattanooga for the 14th Annual Shawn Adams Memorial Spirit of the Game Ultimate Tournament. Meredith took this picture, and I think it's great. There are many more good pictures in her portfolio, linked above via the title of this post ( the title is immediately above the group picture.)

Below are the two pictures I like of the few I took.

the next step

I took the MPRE two weeks ago. I will find whether I passed it in the next couple of weeks. If I've passed the MPRE, I look forward to starting out solo in October.

Today I visited criminal court, where I found a former classmate who's been taking appointments for a few months. He showed me around a bit and had some encouraging advice. I'm excited and nervous/worried.
